The battle of Ganymede taught Jason Wander about the devastation of war. After seeing the deaths of his troops as well as his lover, this battle-scarred soldier is ready for peace.

At twenty-five, General Jason Wander has fought and won man's only alien conflict. Now, after long years in space, he's coming home ... but to what? Earth's desperate nations, impoverished by war damage and military spending, are slashing defence budgets. There's just one problem with this new worldwide policy the first alien invasion was merely Plan A.

Suddenly, the real assault begins Earth is attached by a vast armada of city-sized warships. To block their invasion, mankind has only one surviving craft and a single guerrilla strike force a suicide squad led by Jason Wander.

Was it Edison who said that invention was 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration? Jason is not a born warrior, or even a student of enemy strategy- he wears the uniform of command, not diplomat or attorney. He performs 'beyond the call' as if he needs approval of past comrades. Never far from those memories, he leads by inspired (sometimes foolhardy) deeds. He will be haunted by his rash words and acts.
Continuing from Orphanage (Jason Wander), one is surprised that he retains his commission, is offered adulation, great meals, even a movie deal. Earth has suffered, vast parts of it cold, unfit to grow food. The standard of living has not and will not recover. Just rebuilding ruined cities may bankrupt Earth governments. This is reality as Jason returns from his first campaign. Many troops exhibit PTSD; he could go either way. Grim news builds suspense.
Then Jason and Co. are called to perform one more act of inspired insubordination. Loyal fans, take heart, the action is dramatic.

Orphan Destiny Jason Wander series book 2 eBook Robert Buettner Reviews

Great continuation of an awesome story. I can't wait to read the next one.
Good
Great book. Really follows nicely with Orphanage. After winning against the aliens Wander is returned to Earth that is trying to recover the economy of pre war times. The story line is pretty predictable but the dialog and situations are simply some of the best. The character development is also good as we see the main characters continue to grow. The last chapter is again set further in the future so thankfully he is planning more books in this storyline.
This novel which is an obvious homage to Starship Troopers (mostly the movie rather than the novel) is full of the typical boot camp marine going to war cliche's but is well written and fun to read. While I'm not a fan of the alien enemy characters and how they were developed (c'mon, slugs?!? Is that the best you can come up with?) I still kept coming back and reading. This is the first science fiction series that has kept my attention in years. Also, the DI in this book is obviously modeled after R. Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket and Mail Call fame whom I never get tired of.
The Slugs return, but in greater numbers, and this time heading directly to Earth. Humanity is pretty much unprepared, it does not have many defenses against the attack. Jason Wander is again involved, and what follows is a very action packed and entertaining story.

This book is funny like the others, and contains great space battle action. It starts off as a good story of Jason Wander and the survivors returning to Earth after the Ganymede invasion, wondering how to live a normal life after the war. Of course that does not last long with the impending invasion. It’s a great continuation in the war with the slugs, and is highly recommended for fans of military sci-fi and military space opera.
"Orphan's Destiny" picks up immediately following the events of the series's first book, Orphanage (Jason Wander). We find newly field promoted General Wanderer trying keep the few remaining heroes from the "Battle of Ganymede" alive. Since the travel time involved, using human technology, takes so long for interplanetary flight, many years have passed before Jason and his troops return home...and the home he returned to is a very different place than what it was when he left (both socially and politically). Where does this new environment leave the new General and his veterans? Robert Buettner does a very good job spinning this tale and adds the same humor found in the first book...mostly at the expense of Jason Wander caught like a deer in the headlights!

Highly recommended sequel! I am already reading the next book, Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander).
As another reviewer said, this sequel is much different than the Orphan's War, the first in the series. Alot less combat, alot more talking and political stuff. That doesn't mean its a worse book, it just means the focus is different and you might like it more or less depending on which parts of the first one you liked

I personally finished it up and couldn't wait to read the 3rd one, which apparently isn't anywhere near being published yet, but if you want wall to wall alien combat you might want to try something else. I will say that some of the parts dealing with the main character's friends and new love interest seemed a little forced, and both books in this series are the kind you can read and immediately forget, so its not going to change your entire world view or anything with hard hitting philosophical questions or different ways of looking at yourself or anything like that. Its more like sci-fi lite than the kind of thing you might have gotten from Heinlein, to whom Buttner is often compared on the back covers of his books

If I can find anything else written by Buettner, I'll buy it though, so take that for whatever its worth. If you're looking for a good book to read on vacation or on the plane/train/car ride or rainy afternoon, you could do alot worse than this one
